The Witcher 3 Remastered Is Out Today — and It Won’t Cost You a Cent

Geralt of Rivia is getting a fresh coat of paint. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered launched today, September 29, as a free update for everyone who already owns the game on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

CD Projekt calls it the first release of its kind for the game: not a simple resolution bump, but a reworking that touches visuals, combat, progression, and quality of life. The download is roughly 45GB, and it bundles the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions, so even returning players are getting a lot of game for zero dollars.

Visually, the remaster upgrades textures across environments, NPCs, and monsters, with reworked foliage and an overhauled lighting and rendering pipeline. Path tracing is exclusive to the PC version, while the PS5 Pro build uses PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) to hold 60 frames per second with ray tracing switched on.

Combat gets revamped animations, new finishers, an adaptive camera, and fresh visual effects for all five witcher signs — Aard, Igni, Yrden, Quen, and Axii. Common enemies like wolves and drowners behave differently now, and the entire skill system has been rebuilt with new abilities replacing the old progression tree.

The quality-of-life list reads like a community wishlist. Geralt and Roach get new movement animations, witcher senses now reveal clues only when you focus on the right details, and the main menu and notifications have been refreshed. Transmog arrives at last, letting you dress up weapons and armor however you like without sacrificing stats — fashion souls, rejoice.

Extras round things out: an expanded photo mode, cross-platform mod support through mod.io, and “Bard’s Ballad,” an accessibility option for players with cognitive limitations such as attention deficits that tweaks selected gameplay elements, including automatic self-healing.

Switch 2 players get platform-specific touches too: motion controls for signs, the crossbow, bombs, potions, and Roach, plus gyro aiming, a mouse mode, and touchscreen support for the map, menus, and Gwent.

Practical notes: the update unlocks on a rolling schedule — 3 am Pacific / 6 am Eastern in the US, 11 am in the UK, noon in Central Europe, 8 pm in Sydney, 11 pm in New Zealand. There is no preload on most platforms, so clear at least 45GB before you start; Battle.net is the exception, since The Witcher 3 is arriving on that platform for the first time. With automatic updates enabled, the remaster should simply appear in your library today.

Eleven years after its original release, The Witcher 3 remains the benchmark open-world RPGs are measured against. Today’s remaster is CD Projekt’s way of making sure it stays there.
