Fortnitemares 2026: FNAF and Freddy Krueger Hit Fortnite
Fortnite is haunted again — and earlier than ever. The v42.30 patch landed on October 1, 2026, kicking off Fortnitemares 2026, the earliest start the annual Halloween event has had in years. For comparison, last year’s edition didn’t begin until October 9, and the 2024 one waited until October 12. This time Epic didn’t waste any time, taking servers offline at 4 AM ET for a roughly two-hour update before dropping players into the island’s spookiest season yet.
This year’s theme is “The Game Is Cursed,” and it’s more than a tagline. The glitch-and-horror aesthetic ties directly into Chapter 7, Season 4: Override, which began on August 20 and is expected to wrap up at the end of October. Strange anomalies are corrupting the map, and with the season finale approaching, Fortnitemares 2026 feels less like a holiday side event and more like the closing act of the current storyline.
The headline crossover is Five Nights at Freddy’s. Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy are all arriving as skins, with Withered variants reportedly in the mix, plus a Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria experience and even a jam track built around The Living Tombstone’s FNAF anthem. The island itself is transforming: Battlewoods has been reworked into a darker, jack-o’-lantern-covered area called Gravegate, and an arcade landmark north of it is being converted into the pizzeria.
But FNAF isn’t alone. Epic’s key art, revealed September 28, also confirmed Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street — reportedly appearing as a boss at a new Elm Street location — alongside Slender Man, Beetlejuice, The Purge, Black Clover, and Obsession. Leaks point to even more horrors on the way, including Predator and Hazbin Hotel.
The loot pool is getting into the spirit too. A new SAW-inspired “Boom Billy” Mythic lets players deploy explosive, tracking traps, while Halloween staples like the Pumpkin Launcher and Witch Broom are returning. Two new Halloween Sprites — jack-o’-lantern and vampire companions — join the lineup, and the fan-favorite Horde Rush mode is back for the season.
Best of all for completionists, there are freebies to chase. Seasonal quests will unlock cosmetic rewards, Sprite Dust, and mysterious “Lobby Hack Codes,” with at least one full skin earnable for free through challenges.
With a month of scares ahead and the Override season finale looming, Fortnitemares 2026 might be the most packed Halloween event Fortnite has ever run. Time to stock up on bandages — and maybe avoid Elm Street after dark.
