Overwatch Season 5 Goes Live With Vampire Hero Doctrine

The wait is over for Overwatch fans: Season 5, titled A Grim Doctrine, is live today, October 6. Blizzard packed this one full — a brand-new Support hero with a vampire twist, a shocking role change for one of the game’s oldest characters, a fresh map, and a Halloween takeover that runs through early November.

Headlining the season is Doctrine, the game’s 54th hero and the final figure in the Reign of Talon story arc. This vampire-inspired Support fights alongside Doomfist — the same Doomfist who just broke him out of an Icelandic prison in the game’s latest animated short. Doctrine drains and redistributes lifeforce across the battlefield: his Eternal Scepter heals teammates while hurting enemies, his bat-like drones boost healing and attack speed, and his Infuse ability upgrades whichever power he uses next. His Ultimate, Deliverance, gives allies Overhealth while cutting into enemy health pools — a swing that can decide team fights.

But the biggest surprise may not be Doctrine at all. Sombra, the sneaky hacker who has been a Damage hero for years, is switching to the Support role — only the second role change of its kind in the game’s history. Roadhog is getting a rework too, with a reworked Scrap Gun and a brand-new Trash Compactor ability.

The new Escort map, Grímsvötn, takes the fight inside the Talon-controlled prison where Doctrine was held, set in an Icelandic volcanic fissure. On the seasonal side, the Halloween event Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games runs October 6 through November 2, with respawns granting random new powers and weekly community votes deciding which heroes rise from the grave next.

There’s also a Shadow Monarch anime collaboration running October 6–26 with themed skins, returning old Battle Passes through Unvaulted Passes, new Mythic cosmetics including Lucio’s first Mythic Weapon, Halloween Battle Pass skins, the Tech Witches collection, and the return of Team Drives at the end of the month.

Season 5 closes out Overwatch’s year-long Reign of Talon storyline, so expect the narrative to build toward something big. With a new hero, two reworked ones, and a map all dropping at once, today might be the best time all year to jump back in.
